Come out to the Shoppee for a night of deep and strange interpretations of the possibilities of music that is often called “folk.” Opening the evening will be Pythias Braswell (duo), featuring Esmé Schwall on cello, who will brain-mix experiences and cry em’ out. Following that will be Idaho duo, Star Family Singers with their strong harmonies and Northern moods, and to finish the evening will be improvisational local legends, The Modern Folk.
The Modern Folk is a borderless musical recording and improvisational group based mostly out of the Cowlitz and Clackamas land currently known as Portland, Oregon. They make folk music, when and where they can.

Pythias Braswell is the musical offering of Michael C. Hays, a poet and composer whose songs are direct, impassioned, austere, haunting and hopeful. His vocals combine the trance-induced, improvised expansions often found in devotional hymns of the world, with the structure and lyrical clarity of a Jazz-era ballad. His guitar work draws from American folk traditions until it reaches the edge and falls off into unknown regions. Originally from Iowa, Hays now lives in Portland, OR. Hays is joined by cellist Esmé Schwall.
